Cultural intelligence is a learned capability that can be developed by almost anyone.  Rather than expecting individuals to master all the norms of all possible cultures, cultural intelligence helps an individual develop an overall repertoire and perspective that results in greater cross-cultural effectiveness across many different inter-cultural situations..

The four dimensions of CQ —Motivational CQ, Cognitive CQ, Metacognitive CQ, and Behavioral CQ—can be thought of as a 4-step cycle used when facing any cross-cultural situation:

      Step

 1:

 CQ

 Drive

What’s my motivation for this cross-cultural interaction?
Step

 2:

 CQ

 Knowledge

What cultural understanding do I need to do this effectively?
Step

 3:

 CQ

 Strategy

What’s my plan?

Step

 4:

 CQ

Action

What behaviors should I adapt to do this respectfully and effectively?
